Research abstract

Stochastic resonance is an effect in which a nonlinear system amplifies a weak and noisy modulated signal. Some signals that are too weak for direct detection can be measured using stochastic resonance systems. This project Will examine the feasibility of developing an optical stochastic resonance detector (OSRD). A prototype OSRD will be constructed based on a photorefractive ring resonator configuration. Measurements will be performed in different noise environments in order to determine the operating characteristics and limitations of the system. It is expected that future versions of the OSRD can be miniaturized using low power diode lasers and photorefractive fibers. Consequently, the OSRD has the potential to be a compact and convenient device for measuring extremely weak and noisy optical signals.
