Research abstract

Military applications such as aircraft and military require compact and efficient oxygen generation systems. In this program, NexTech Materials is collaborating with Northrop Grumman to produce a Ceramic Oxygen Generator (COG) capable of meeting theseneeds. The critical component for COG systems is the ceramic electrolyte, which separates oxygen from air. Prior to Phase I, NexTech had produced high-surface area ceramic materials with high ionic conductivity and low processing temperatures, characteristics of a good electrolyte material. In Phase I, routes were developed to produce powders compatible with conventional ceramic fabrication routes. The approach was a success - the modified powders demonstrated high ionic conductivity and weresuccessfully integrated into processes at Northrop Grumman to produce the COG modules. In Phase II, a 50-psi, 6.25 liter/minute, breadboard COG system will be built to demonstrate electrolyte performance. To optimize performance and reliability withinthis design, Phase II will focus on improving the electrochemical and mechanical properties of the electrolytes. Tailoring the material for COG applications will reduce the system operating temperature and power required, while increasing reliability andruggedness, and lowering the system cost. At the conclusion of Phase II, a breadboard demonstrator system will be delivered to the Air Force.
