Research abstract

A FOUR-ELEMENT FEASIBILITY STUDY IS PROPOSED TO EVALUATE A NOVEL IDEA FOR PROVIDING URINARY BLADDER CONTINENCE TO INCONTINENT INDIVIDUALS, ESPECIALLY THE AGED. THE DEVICE IS A NONSURGICALLY INSERTED FLEXIBLE SEAL. MICTURITION CAN BE INITIATED BY AN EXTERNAL SEAL CONTROLLER. BECAUSE THE DEVICE CAN BE INSERTED INTO THE BLADDER THROUGH A UROCATHETER, SURGERY IS NOT REQUIRED. THE PHASE I FEASIBILITY STUDY WILL DEVELOP THE DEVICE, AN EXTERNAL CONTROLLER, AND EVALUATE THE SEALING EFFECTIVENESS IN EXCISED DOG BLADDERS. FINALLY THE DEVICE WILL BE INSERTED AND EVALUATED IN AT LEAST ONE IN VIVO DOG EXPERIMENT. PHASE II WILL MODIFY THE DEVICE FOR HUMAN USE AND EVALUATE ITS EFFECTIVENESS. IF THE PHASE I AND II WORK PROVES THE UTILITY OF THE SEAL, COMMERCIALIZATION COULD OCCUR QUICKLY BECAUSE OF THE SEAL'S SIMPLICITY. FURTHER COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH INSTALLATION OF THE DEVICE SHOULD BE LOW.
