Research abstract
OMNI Engineering & Technology, Inc. proposes an unprecedented combination of industrial engineering techniques and advanced computer technologies to develop an expert system to overcome traditional difficulties associated with generating job standards for long-duration, infrequently performed tasks. Heretofore, job standards for activities such as space shuttle ground processing and depot maintenance of large aircraft have been difficult and cost prohibitive to develop. The project objective is to determine the feasibility of developing a computer-aided expert system to generate job standards for low frequency, long-cycle work activities. To satisfy this objective, we will document the work measurement and job standards development process, identify alternative hardware/software solutions, design a system architecture, and document research results in a final report. When completed, this research effort will yield a suggested system architecture that, when developed, will result in a highly useful and flexible computer-aided tool to generate job standards. NASA will benefit from this tool by being able to rapidly develop reliable job standards for low-frequency, long-duration tasks. In addition to satisfying NASA's needs, the system will be generic and lend itself to many functions in the private and public sectors of the economy.
