Research abstract
The proposed Phase I research project will quantify the sources of contamination in powder/binder processing of sapphire monofilament reinforced gamma TiAl metal matrix composites as currently practiced, demonstrate alternative reduced contamination binder systems and removal methods, and examine the feasibility of binderless processing of powder/monofilament combinations. In addition, sputter-coated sapphire monofilaments will be prepared having coatings of the same alloy composition as that of the low-interstitial powders for comparison of product quality and relative contamination levels. Sources of contamination in each process will be identified and methods for minimization demonstrated. The project will provide samples of materials prepared both by powder/binder processing and by sputtering to Pratt & Whitney-Florida for independent evaluation. The project will be performed with the technical assistance of Pratt & Whitney-Florida and Rice University.
