Research abstract

Aircraft masking is a major contributor to the maintenance backlog making it a prime candidate for technology support. Masking is traditionally done with a combination of tape, paper, and plastic wraps. These materials require a person to tediously tack down, cut, splice, and adjust every step of the way to conform to highly contoured substrate. Recognizing this pressing need, Figure Engineering proposes a transformative solution: the integration of the Signac precision robotic deposition system with COTS liquid masking materials.  During the Phase 2, Figure will perform testing and qualification work necessary to obtain safe-use approval from cognizant Air Force authorities. Following this approval, Figure will modify its Signac technology to demonstrate the capability to precisely deposit peelable masking material with both narrow and broad patterns in multiple orientations.
