Research abstract

Not Available Under the Clean Water Act, the EPA is developing effluent guidelines for facilities that generate wastewater while processing metal parts, metal products, and machineries. The proposed rule covers maintenance activities such as aircraft engine washing and establishes daily and monthly discharge limits for analytes. Currently, the Navy's T-56 engines contain parts that are electroplated with nickel-cadmium. Testing of the effluent from these engines indicates that the discharge exceeds the TCLP limit of 1.0 mg/L for cadmium. The proposed Phase I research intends to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of using constructed wetlands to treat washrack effluent contaminants from aircraft washing facilities. Phase I research will develop an initial design that is compact and low maintenance. Capital costs for construction of the constructed wetlands treatment system will be comparable with existing systems currently in use and will not generate appreciable secondary waste.
