Research abstract

Different influence fuzing technologies for detection and classification of heavy vehicles will be investigated including acoustic and magnet with various hardening techniques. Sensor influence due to heavy machinery through a thick steel bomb body will be studied to improve sensitivity and resolution. A new sensor technology utilizing IC technology with Giant Magnetoresistive (GMR) materials will be evaluated since it has many of the desired properties including micro-miniature size, high shock tolerance, DC field sensing, and high magnetic field sensitivity. Spin Dependent Tunneling (SDT) devices with GMR materials have demonstrated the potential for very high sensitivity. GMR magnetic sensors designed in 2 and 3 axis configurations will be studied to improve world wide sensing of armored vehicles without regard to the Earth's magnetic field declination angle. Samples of the various sensor technologies studied will be evaluated with NVE's in-house High G Tester (HGT) to determine their shock survivability. Trade off studies will be made to determine the best compromise between survivability and function/capability of the most promising sensors and concepts. A preliminary design of a influence fuze system will be implemented based on the analysis above as well as NVE's experience in high shock munitions data recorders.
