Research abstract

The lithium x-ray lens successfully demonstrated in Phase I will be improved until its performance is at the theoretically expected level. The lens will be implementedon the APS and the NSLS synchrotrons, Jefferson Lab, and the Stanford/LLNL LCLS. Besides the alligator lens of Phase I we will also produce lenses that focus with a parabolic profiles, in one and two dimensions. We will determine the niche for refractive x-ray lenses in competition with other types of x-ray optics, and bring to marketthose that work best through commercial representatives.X-ray lenses enhance the capabilities of all x-ray machines, from small laboratorysources to modern synchrotrons, by reducing x-ray spot size while increasing intensity.Refractive lenses from lithium are the most effective. Applications range from inspectionof advanced electronics with x-rays through micro-machining to scientific research.
