Research abstract

Use the results of Phase I investigation to develop a power dense, modular DC-DC converter for Hybrid Electric Vehicle applications. Focus will be on proving out the power converter material and assembly system in an demonstration system that could bemodified for test in an application that of interest to both the Military and Commercial automotive industry. The technology will be of broad interest in motor drives for HEV's and other applications such as distributed power generation. There are a largenumber of Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) programs ongoing at this time and many of them require DC-DC converters to mediate power between sub systems. This situation is not expected to change in the near future since basic material physics drives thisrequirment. Consequently there is a large potential market for high power DC-DC Converters in the vehicular market and another one in distributed generation. SatCon Technology Corporation works with military and civilian automotive companies buildingarmored vehicles, trucks, bus's and automobiles and has experience meeting their rigorous cost and performance goals. With a market need and customers SatCon has an opportunity to create a product line that can be commercially viable. The Modular HighPower Density Vehicular DC-DC Conbverter (MVDC) developed in this program would be a building block product that can meet the needs of many customers, lowering their development and acquisition costs. A small family of MVDC blocks with various input andoutput voltage levels would be developed to meet the widest possible set of customer expectations. Due to its modular nature and clean interfaces MVDC is naturally upgradeable as better technologies evolve. SatCon would team with other companies todevelop, build and deploy the MVDC. This program has the requirements for a successful commercial takeoff; an expanding market and a new product with compelling advantages supported by a company willing to take it to the market.
