Research abstract
We propose to develop a new approach to real-time 3D display that involves no mechanical moving parts by employing vary fast image display devices and 3D storage materials. The principle of this approach is to compose a true 3D image in a volumetric storage medium from a series of 2D cross sectional images. Based on the currently available technologies we expect to be able to display 3D images of 128 x 128 x 128 voxels at 30 times/sec. Besides no moving parts and high voxel bandwidth, additional advantages of the approach are wide angle of view, flexibility in displaying format, and without the reqirement of viewing spectacles. The markets of 3D display are sizable (about $500 Billion) and applications are numerous, including both military (e.g. battle management, air traffic control) and commercial (e.g. medical imaging, scientif computing, video games, etc.). Upon completion of Phase 1, a solid foundation for prototype of a 3D display system will be built.
