Research abstract

"SYTRONICS proposes to apply significant experience and familiarity with speech technology, wearable computer systems, and text-to-speech to the provide a hands-free, Speech-enabled COgnitive Performance Assessment and Recording System (SCOPARS). Thiscapability will provide an effective and intuitive means for the warfighter to assess cognitive performance and self-rated states (moods, symptoms, work load, etc.) in outdoor operational environments. A simple two-controller approach uses voice fortext-and-click entry and head movement, as well as speech, for pointing. A noise reducing microphone filter provides additional noise reduction, a glasses mounted, full color display provides visual feedback, a text-to-speech engine provides audiofeedback, and a SYTRONICS-developed inertial tracker provides cursor movement. Our Phase I objectives will be to (1) Establish the Requirements, Applicability, and User Acceptance, (2) Provide an Innovative Application of Proven Technology, (3) ConductSystematic Testing of all System Elements, and (4) Determine the Commercialization Potential. Our Phase I products will be: (1) A SCOPARS concept demonstration, and (2) A Final Report. While SCOPARS is intended for initial use in military medical researchprograms, its capabilities complement and extend the objectives of the Warfighter Physiological Status Monitoring System and has the potential for monitoring Government and commercial users in numer
