Research abstract

41089 November 20, 1996 Ronin Systems, Inc. Video compression is a critical technology for maximizing scarce bandwidth. Different compression techniques offer different advantages, including compression ratio, compression and decompression speed, and image fidelity. This project will modify and improve an existing compression package. In order to maximize speed, the software will be ported to a message passing massively parallel processor. The software will also be able to run on networks of workstations to maximize price-performance. A scalability analysis of the resultant software will be conducted, providing a comprehensive understanding of the different tradeoffs available to prospective users of digital video compression. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The software should enable prospective users of digital video to reduce compression time or transmission time, or both, of their signals. In addition, higher compression ratios will allow users in satellite communications to adopt more robust compression schemes.
