Research abstract

65519 Localized corrosion of materials used in energy production and conservation limits the lifetime of components made from these materials. Non-invasive methods are needed to determine the sequence of chemical changes that produce pits in aluminum alloys and crevices in titanium alloys and stainless steel. This project will develop a non-invasive video imaging technique to detect early stages of corrosion and provide detailed information about pitting rates and the kinetics of pit growth. In Phase I, digital image processing will be optimized by employing improved optics and cameras with wide-range pH indicators to highlight sites of corrosion, and initial sites will be located using refractive index changes induced by the dissolved corrosion products. Afterwards, the video imaging will be integrated with scanning microelectrode and current density mapping techniques. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: Non-destructive quality assays, which are efficient to build and operate, should lead to reduced production costs and longer product life.
