Research abstract

IPITEK proposes a novel low-voltage, low-loss 20 GHz continuous bandwidth electro-optic modulator based on nonlinear optical (NLO) polymer materials. The proposed approach will be based IPITEK's recent experimental success in achieving 0.8 V halfwavevoltage, and insertion loss reduction techniques that considerably improved light throughput. Optical push-pull will be used to reduce the half-wave voltage to less than 1 volt, and waveguide and fiber tapering methods will be utilized to reduce insertionlosses lower than 6 dB. Our three-dimensional adiabatic tapered waveguide transitions combined with lensed or tapered fiber will result in low optical interface loss. We will attempt to incorporate modulator technology developed during Phase II inIPITEK's wide bandwidth analog and digital communication systems. The potential for commercial applications is excellent, and high optical power throughput with low losses, high dynamic range, small size, and low cost will satisfy both military andcommercial requirements, and fit IPITEK's present and continuing marketing and sales agenda.
