Research abstract

Communication and wireless network technology has advanced to the state whereportable computing devices have proliferated to enable ubiquitous computing.Similarly, Internet and collaboration technologies have grown tremendously. Thereremain significant obstacles, however, to integrate wireless and Internettechnologies. In particular, most modern wireless networks do not provide adequatesupport for multicast communication. Many military applications require reliablemulticast transmission to properly and efficiently operate. In particular, therecent initiative of the Tactical Internet (TI), which provides C2, SA and fusedinformation to the warfighter, has numerous functions requiring this capability.Trident proposes to implement a Wireless Reliable Multicast (WiReM) protocolbased on active network technology, utilizing soft-state protocol techniques. The protocol implementation will rely on object-oriented methodology and will becompatible with the emerging Software Communications Architecture (SCA)specifications. New application-specific and/or network-specific multicastprotocols may be easily integrated and incrementally deployed through existingsystems.
