Research abstract

The widespread use of hydrogen for automobiles will require cost effective and energy efficient hydrogen production and delivery technologies. Previous research has focused on central hydrogen fueling. However, the drawback of this scenario is that large investments would be required to provide an infrastructure that includes large scale hydrogen production and distribution, as well as numerous expensive refueling stations. These infrastructure problems could be overcome by an advanced Hydrogen Home Refueling (HHR) system. This project will develop a low cost electrolyzer appliance, based on a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM), to provide a refueling capability for a typical hydrogen passenger car at a homeowner¿s site. The design will be based on an advanced Integrated Flow Field cell design which has demonstrated excellent electrolyzer performance. Phase I will examine the detailed performance and safety requirements for the design, usability, and cost of the appliance. Phase II would entail the construction of a proof-of-concept device to demonstrate the technology. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The HHR appliance would be a key enabler for the transition to hydrogen-fueled vehicles, by eliminating fuel distribution costs and making use of lower-cost off-peak electricity. The appliance could be sold through the same dealerships that handle hydrogen vehicle sales and service. Pollution and greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced by using high efficiency hydrogen and implementing environmentally friendly electricity generation throughout the electrical grid.
