Research abstract

An innovative electro-optical vibration sensor concept is proposed for test and evaluation which will provide early detection and warning of aircraft structural damage. Patented technology will allow a compact, lightweight, and eye-safe laser velocimeter system to be constructed for vibration measurement. Phase I will demonstrate on representative aircraft type structure the ability of the laser vibration sensor to detect and characterize damage to the structure. Phase II is contemplated to result in a final preproduction design of the optical system along with development of a dedicated processor.
