Research abstract

A method for modeling the effects of unsteady steady aerodynamics has been proposed during a phase I effort will be investigated further by Bihrle Applied Research Inc (BAR). In order to be compatible with existing simulation and conventional datacollection methods, this new method makes use of existing convention aerodynamics model and applies time dependent corrections. The new unsteady aircraft response model will be identified from force, moment, and pressure data collected during specificallydesigned wind tunnel test maneuvers then verified using a close form technique. Once the modeling approach has been verified, a model will be developed for implementation into an existing Navy provided simulation model and validated with flight data. Toaccomplish these objectives, a new high-speed data acquisition hardware software package will be developed in addition to reconfigurable data reduction tools. Upon the completion of this Phase II effort, Bihrle Applied Research will have developed a newtesting and modeling approaches that will help improve the fidelity of research flight simulations as well as those needed for flight training. These capabilities will be unique in the military and commercial aviation and simulation industries and willprove to be a marketable service to BAR existing customer base as well as new customers. In addition to services BAR expects a software product to be developed from the efforts of this SBIR. This product will provide real time and posttest pressure analysis and visualization. Such a tool will be useful for researchers in a number of fields, including aviation, automotive, and academic arenas.
