Research abstract

Using a remarkably simple design and few components, the compact mechatronic actuator represents a one-for-one replacement for existing hydraulic actuators such as those currently employed on LCAC. Typically it will be lighter in weight and slightlysmaller in size than its standard hydraulic equivalent thus providing the compact form factor and thrust needed by NCSC Panama City for the target goal of replacing the rudder control. Due to its unique ability to increase its thrust torque by simplyincreasing the number of hybrid solid-state drivers, it will also be directly applicable to bow thrusters, ramps for loading and offloading cargo, and cushion vanes without any re-engineering or scaling. This translates to substantial savings in inventoryand servicing. The self-contained actuator will be compatible with the existing position sensor and servo signals enabling no changes in existing cockpit controls. The elimination of parts means that, as a motion system, it is more affordable andrelatively lightweight when compared to hydraulics, pneumatics or electric motor solutions. The unique ability to scale up the thrust torque capability of the mechatronic actuator by simply adding additional shaft drive elements to a common design, meansthat the unit can be inexpensively manufactured and serviced. The implication is that the new technology will be a viable replacement for a wide range of existing pneumatic and hydraulic motion systems in the automotive manufacturing, defense, constructionand consumer markets. QorTek will be working closely with our partner Curtiss-Wright, and through them Northrop Grumman Corporation, to take this technology into the fleet and commercial marine sales.
