Research abstract
We propose a highly reliable, airborne ejection data recorder with unprecedented capabilities. Data will be stored from just prior to ejection, for the duration desired, eliminating unnecessary data. The data can be digitally filtered in real time using DSP algorithms of the users choice, and compressed if needed. The data will be stored in a solid-state, non-volatile device for later retrieval. Use of COTS PCMCIA technology will reduce cost. Data will be protected from bit errors by employing Error Correction Codes. Additionally, we propose Fault tolerant techniques that will further boost the reliability of such systems. Advanced packaging technologies will allow for compact, reliable, and economical system that can be tailored for changes in future user needs. Our team brings tremendous expertise in high speed data acquisition, digital signal processing, hardware design, computer science, aviation safety and mechanical engineering. Currently, we are implementing a solid state airborne data recorder under an Air Force SBIR, based largely on COTS technology and open standards. This experience will benefit us when designing the Escape System Data Recorder. The Principal Investigator, and other members of the highly skilled team hold numerous patents in Electrical, Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering as well as Computer Science.
