DATA INTENSIVE APPLICATIONS PLACE A BURDEN ON EXISTING DATABASE SYSTEMS. ESPECIALLY ACUTE ARE THE REQUIREMENTS PLACED BY APPLICATIONS THAT REQUIRE DATABASE SEMANTICS BEYOND THE SCOPE OF EXISTING ENVIRONMENTS. WORK IN OBJECT-ORIENTED DATABASE TECHNIQUES PROMISES TO ALLEVIATE SOME OF THESE PROBLEMS. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN EXTENSIBLE DATABASE ENVIRONMENTS WILL SUPPORT THE INTEGRATION OF OBJECTAPPROACHES WITH EXISTING DATA MODELS TO CREATE HYBRID DATA MODELS ON AN APPLICATION SPECIFIC BASIS. THIS PROPOSAL DESCRIBES AN APPROACH TO BUILD ON AN EXISTING EXTENSIBLE DATABASE ENVIRONMENT. KNOWLEDGE STRUCTURES ARE PROPOSED TO MODEL CARTOGRAPHIC PROCESSING AND INTEGRATE RAW DATA SETS TOSUPPORT NEW APPLICATION FOR DOC DATA SETS. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THIS PROJECT WILL IDENTIFY SPECIFIC DATA MODELS NEEDED FOR CARTOGRAPHIC SUPPORT AND DEFINE NEW USES AND REQUIREMENTS FOR DOC DATABASES.
