Research abstract

When microwaves are focused at a coated aluminum surface, the energy is reflected by the aluminum substrate, but not before the signal is effected by passing through the coating. When corrosion is preenet under the coating the dielectric signature changesbecuase corrosion products are dielectrics. It is this change caused by the presence of cororsion that is exploited in development of microwave corrosion detectors (MCDs). In Phase I a successful MCD pre-prototype was built that detected corrosion underaircraft paints and appliques in a repeatable and reliable fashion. The Phase II proposal seeks to optimize for aircraft corrosion detection under coatings in three ways - (1) by improving the microwave assembly through componenet selection and designmodification, (2) by developing electronic threshold circuits and displays, and (3) by developing a scanning truck and housing system that make the sensor easy to use on aircraft surfaces. After an alpha prototype that integrates and tests theoptimization efforts, 20 beta level prototypes will be manufactured. These will be distributed to NAVAIR and Delta Airlines for evaluation. Also at this time the beta level MCDs will undergo Navy NDE qualification testing. After theevalaution/qualification period, Phase II Option proposes to refine the design once more before producing 50 units for Fleet demos and use. Transition to commerical markets is handled by keeping the costs below a $1000 a unit and distributing throughcompanies that supply the aircraft industry with inspection devices and tools.
