Research abstract

The Infrared Fire Detector and Alarm (IRFDA) is proposed to provide the United States Air Force with a system that is capable of detecting fire in large aircraft hangars, also in proximity of fuel, ammunition and other hazardous material storage areas. The IRFDA system will be a cost effective, easily installed system, that can potentially reduce the costs associated with fire damage and false alarms. The IRFDA system will also reduce the probability of the loss of life from a dangerous fire. This system will be relatively compact, rugged (for outdoor operatin), reliable, and provide a wide area of coverage. The IRFDA system will utilize the most current fire detection sensor technologies to provide the most accurate fire detection capabilities available, and minimize the amount of false alarms. The current sensor technologies that are most likely appropriate for the IRFDA system are optical flame detectors, however, advanced techniques will provide improved operation.
