Research abstract

"The proposed VLWIR focal plane array is uncooled and frames images without temporal latency. The new imager technology proposed utilizes multiple MEMS image matrices and a rad hard semiconductor technology. Standard silicon imaging technology is coupledwith MEMS etalons to produce a low cost, minimal weight, and NEDT levels fully comparable with LN-cooled HgCdTe arrays. Our proposed solution for MDA is based on US patents issued and pending that covers the rad hard, sensing, and systems aspects of thehighly innovative imager. We propose 4 IR colors in the stated VLWIR range with simultaneous, frame-by-frame display readout. The New Jersey Microsystems multi-color imager permits separate sensors for acquisition, discrimination, and terminal guidance .During Phase I we will demonstrate a proof-of-concept to be further implemented with Phase II prototypes in partnership with a major DoD contractor. This multi-color VLWIR technology funded by MDA is a pioneering technology that can be tech transferredinto commercial applications in years to come. The highly sophisticated MDA multi-color uncooled subsystem will eventually evolve to low cost multicolor systems for use by firefighters, ground security forces, surveillance, and guidance both in militaryand nonmilitary applications. The proposed is a generation beyond present day commercial application and will greatly extend the capability of single IR band systems currently available a
