Research abstract

REI has assembled a team to develop and validate screening tools for 1) assessing different additive functionalities on soot emission, 2) relating these tools to additive performance in engines, and 3) applying the validated tools to nominate additives. This will be accomplished through the following technical tasks: 1) Nomination of additives of known chemical composition (with the assistance of REI consultants Drs. Eyring and Dunn); 2) Experimental evaluation of novel and commercial additives usingpremixed and diffusion flame burners at the University of Utah (UofU) designed to separate additive effects on ignition delay, soot formation, and soot burnout; 3) Development of a detailed chemical kinetic mechanism for additive-containing JP-8 withconsulting inputs on the additive kinetics (Dr. Bozzelli) and soot formation (Dr. Frenklach); and 4) Implementation of chemical kinetic and soot models into the CFD code UNICORN (in collaboration with subcontractor ISSI) with code validation using datafrom the UofU and from an ongoing SERDP program (PP-11799, Dr. Roquemore, PI). The team will determine how best to use the combination of small-scale experiments and models to reproduce WPAFB engine results. The team will use the validated screening toolsto nominate additives for the engine tests.
