Research abstract

A RF Radiation Absorbent Material (RAM) overheating detector system is proposed for a feasibility study in Phase I in this Small Business INnovation Research project. Large anechoic chambers have reached the limits of safety for heating the RAM when testing modern high energy radar systems. Overheating the RAM does occur internally to start slow combustion that is not observable until fires erupt hours after Radio Frequency (RF) radiation has ceased. A A sensitive overheating detector system is proposed with redundant InfraRed (IR) imaging radiometer and fiber-optic temperature instrumentation will be studied as well as RAM properties and performance analysis. Supporting experiments are likewise considered for phenomenological understanding of the overheating process and RAM combustion that will enable informed parameters to be established for avoiding the overheating condition. A feasible detector design will result from the Phase I project which can be constructed, installed and demonstration tested in the Benefield Anechoic Facility of Edwards AFB, CA.
