Research abstract

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) will play a key role in a highly efficient, near-zero-emission coal-based power generation system. To achieve the target system efficiency, SOFC anodes must be able to tolerate or mitigate the effect of certain coal contaminant compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, arsine, and phosphine. In order to enhance resistance to these coal contaminants, this project will develop a modified cermet anode (because the complete replacement of the current nickel and zirconia cermet anode is neither practically beneficial nor technically feasible) based on recent experimental data. In Phase I, the modified cermet anode will be demonstrated in long-term tests with the contaminant compounds. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The technology would enable solid oxide fuel cells to be used with coal-derived-syngas-containing contaminants. Improved fuel cell power generation technologies would help the nation make more efficient use of its abundant domestic coal reserves
