Research abstract

An oscillating water-air column (OWC) is one of the most technically viable and efficient options for converting wave energy into useful electric power. However, there is a need to increase the overall energy conversion efficiency of the OWC system from its current 25% efficiency to improve the economics necessary for an OWC to compete effectively with other alternative forms of renewable energy. A potential improvement of up to 40% in wave energy recovery has been determined by CN based on its thermo-fluids computational model of an OWC system. The exact amount of improvement is dependent on the off-design operation of the OWC as it attempts to recover energy from a wide range of wave conditions. CN is working with Oceanlinx, Ltd., a world renowned developer of OWC systems to advance the design of Oceanlinx
