Research abstract

ORBITEC will develop an Environmental Stress Measurement Device (ESMD) for missile applications.previous technology efforts in time stress meausurement devices and microelectromechanical sensors (MEMS) will be leveraged to develop and design an ESMD capable of self-powered autonomous operation for 5 to 10 years. The system shall be capable of monitoring analayzing, and recording multiple stress types from several locations on/within a missile or associated support hardware. The evnvironmental stresses shall include, but are not limited to: temperature, vibration and shock, and humidity stresses. Non-intrusive methods of data retrieval will be use to either directly or remotely readout data, allowing data to be gathered on a real time basis. The system will provide more accurate data to verify the readiness and predict failure of missile sysytems as they are in the field or storage; and to determine missile and support equipment shelf-life, spare parts planning, and missile health. As a result, lower life cycle costs will be achieved through "maintenance on demand" opposed to "maintenance on schedule". The phase I effort will result in both a breadboard electronics prototype and overall preliminary ESMD system design. In Phase II, ESMD prototypes will be developed for environmental and operational testing. Commercial uses include detection of environmental stress degredation of bridges, buildings, hazardous material storage and handling, power plants, construction equipment, and general laboratory or manufacturing equipment. In addition, vehicles or all types (planes, trains, buses & trucks, ships/boats, and automobiles) represent potential applications.
