Research abstract

It is expected that accelerated insertion of materials (AIM) will be facilitated through development of linked engineered material databases, that are capable of conducting quick virtual testing of new materials, that is supplemented by limited physicaltesting, rather than proceeding directly to complete experimental characterization. To address this need for reduced insertion time, Materials Sciences Corporation (MSC) proposes to develop and demonstrate computational simulation tools for quickly andreliably predicting the thermo-physical properties of textile fiber reinforced composite materials. The linked engineering knowledge base to be developed under this research program will be based on the Mathematicar style notebook interface, andconstructed like the conventional experimental building-block approach. Individual modules that simulate microstructural behavior will provide input to structured material modules whose output are macro- or structural-level properties. Generation oflimited data at any of the levels can then be expected to provide (limited) validation at other levels. In this fashion, the total amount of testing required to characterize a new textile fiber reinforced material can be reduced. Data interpretationtools, and a database function will be included. Development, validation and commercialization of this modular tool-set is the ultimate goal of this program. The leading applications for the AIM analysis tool-set to be developed and demonstrated by thisresearch are AFRL, and U.S. Air Force advanced airframe, space systems, and engine component designers. In addition to these direct applications, MSC will pursue application of the products of this research to the commercial shipbuilding and aerospacesectors, the automotive industry and the oil exploration industry.
