Research abstract

REVERSE OSMOSIS AND CONVENTIONAL SORPTION METHODS ARE NOT EFFECTIVE AT EFFICIENTLY REMOVING SOME CONTAMINANTS FROM WASTE STREAMS. EXAMPLES OF SUCH CONTAMINANTS ARE ETHANOL, METHANOL, AND UREA. SPECIFIC ENZYMES EXIST WHICH WILL CATALYZE REACTIONS TO CONVERT THESE CONTAMINANTS TO COMPOUNDS WHICH ARE EFFICIENTLY REMOVED BY EXISTING ECLSS SYSTEMS. THESE ENZYMES, WHEN IMMOBILIZED, CAN BE USED IN A PACKED BED CONFIGURATION WHICH IS INTEGRABLE WITH CURRENT ECLSS WATER RECLAMATION SYSTEMS.
