Research abstract

The Training Environment Support System (TESS) is designed to contribute to space operations training by (1) adding satellite operations center (SOC) support applications to Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) training facilities and (2) providinginstructors and trainees with training aids. Currently, high fidelity, simulation-based training for satellite operators does not feature certain important support applications. CHI Systems, Inc. proposes to build cloned versions of these applications, which include weather, scheduling, and internet messaging applications, on a single computer networked to an instructor workstation to allow:¿ training exercises to mirror real world operations;¿ personnel to learn how to interact with them and use their information in a training environment rather than on the job; and¿ personnel to gain experience responding to alerts and warnings generated by those applications.TESS training aids will include scenario development and management, performance tracking and assessment, expert guidance, and instructor-trainee communication tools, in addition to supplementary aids for enhancing knowledge about alerts, warnings, andevents (AWEs) and orbital mechanics. Mature in-house cognitive agent technology will be used to build intelligence into training aids, allowing them to provide guidance in a context-sensitive manner during training exercises.
