Research abstract

Many presently fielded weapons systems as well as systems on the drawing boards, must transmit and store large volume sof digital data generated by electro-optic (EO), imaging infrared (IIR), millimeter wave (MMW) and fiber optic guidance systems. Real time data compresson offers the advantage of smaller storage devices and dat alink systems by reducing the volume of data without reducing the information content. FASTMAN has developed an innovative data compression technology based on the Adaptive Wavelet Transform. In this proposal we demonstrate its ability to efficiently compress extremely diverse types of data. Under current SBIR funding FASTMAN has developed an integrated circuit, called the FASTWAVE chip, which computes adaptive wavelet coefficients at a rate of 50 million/sec and a design for a chip set containing the FASTWAVE chip which can compute the Adapttive Wavelet Transform in real time. In this project, FASTMAN will study the feasibility of using our Adaptive Wavelet Transform to achieve high-level, high-quality compression for the diverse data types of interest in this solicitation.
