Research abstract

65219 The rapid advance of computer processing and telecommunications requires that associated technologies advance at comparable speed. Photonic technology addresses the need for the high-speed, high-bandwidth networks that continue to drive the computer and telecommunications industries. However, it is difficult to interface photonic technology with existing electronic networks and/or nascent optical networks. To address this need, microresonator structures, which are amenable to current wafer-based processing techniques, are currently under development. This project will take advantage of the photophysics of a microcavity resonator in such a way as to allow frequency selective transmission from one optical network to another. The technology would be modular and therefore easily reconfigurable either in existing networks, or in future networks. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: The technology should enhance high-speed optical networks, allowing easy reconfiguration through modular assembly, and thereby greatly impacting the computing, networking, and telecommunications markets.
