Research abstract

This proposal provides potential solutions for the implementation of head-mounted and wrist-mounted wireless displays. This Phase I effort will identify and evaluate custom and Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components. The SOF Tactical Information Display (STID) can be used to provide hands-free viewing of data sent from a wearable computer or PDA. .Phase I will include display evaluations as well as potential portable computer and optional accessories. Designconsiderations will provide the best solution with the lowest power consumption and environmental survivability. The physical size of the STID is influenced by the display selected, the wireless transmission used, ruggedness, and battery life requirements. The necessary tradeoffs will be made to provide a practical solution.Phase I determines which approach best fits the requirements of SOCOM. It will result in a detailed, in-depth, technical report identifying the risk areas, and recommending the approach(s). Components to be used in designing, fabricating and testing in thePhase II, will be presented in this report. The performance analysis and experimental results of Phase I will be detailed. An in-depth cost estimate for the Phase II development and test effort will also be provided. This program will provide improved technologies for wearable computing platforms. It will investigate existing commercial systems, identify needed technology upgrades for wireless displays, and integrate these technologies into tactical informationassistants. The potential commercialization of this technology includes usage by law enforcement, military, emergency services, transportation industries, and construction firms.
