Research abstract
"Microdischarge based chemical sensing is a novel detection scheme that relies on extremely sensitive emission spectroscopy, without the need for expensive plasma sources and vacuum systems required in large scale plasmas. This technique has a broad rangeof capabilities due to its universal detection capabilities for small molecules. Additionally, these sensors are small, rugged, and require very little power to operate. The detector is composed of the following components: a small discharge device (lessthan 1/100th of an inch) in which the chemical of interest is excited; a fiber optic coupler; and a small commercial spectrometer, which outputs data to a computer for analysis. The small size of these detectors makes them ideal for incorporation onsystems that require limited interference from the size and shape of the sensor, such as in aircraft turbine engines. The current application for these detection systems is process control and emissions monitoring for pollutants such as NOx, SOx, CO, CO2and O2. The similarity between the private sector and military applications for these sensors further increases the chances for success and commercial viability. Caviton is developming continuous emissions monitoring systems and hand-held portableinstrumentation for gas detection and process control in the energy industry. This proposal requires a similar technology and will allow caviton to liscense its technology for the production of
