Research abstract

Rapid and accurate evaluation of liquid propellants in the field will enhance DOD operational readiness. Sampling errors, transport time, laboratory test time, and feedback time delays put active units at risk while they wait for “fit-for-purpose” fuel determinations." D-2 Incorporated has provided the US Army and USMC with the Petroleum Expeditionary Analysis Kit (PEAK), which will be fielded starting in 2025 as we complete a six-month durability test. PEAK has demonstrated that a field kit with essential fuel measurement properties can provide rapid assessments and give modern warfighters confidence that the fuel they upload in the battle space will perform as expected. Herein, we propose developing an Enhanced PEAK (E-PEAK) built around our successful PEAK-based kit. The topic proposal has listed 28 parameters (including CI/LI). We can address over 30% of those parameters with PEAK and additional technologies from D-2 Incorporated's current arsenal. There is an additional 25% of those parameters for which D-2 Incorporated has laboratory-based measurement sensors.  These laboratory versions would need conversion to a kit-based version of the technology. Two of these come from secondary sources where D-2 has established letters of intent for development under this program. The remaining 40% will be addressed in the program. We do not know yet if their measurement technologies can be refined for kit application; however, as part of the work plan, each will be investigated for adaptation to the kit. If adaptation can be completed within the budget, that work will proceed. If not, a plan for each will be developed.  That work will then be scoped and can be the subject of additional funding rounds. In summary, D-2 Incorporated is well-positioned to address over 50% of the parameter requests by this topic in an E-PEAK. Our PEAK technology baseline uniquely positions us to respond to this proposal and make significant progress toward eventually addressing all requested items.
