Research abstract
Besides position, GPS also provides time to within 100 ns on a global basis. There exists an opportunity for using GPS to provide a global clock to dispersed mobile platforms, and create an innovative, inexpensive wireless Wide Area Network for a variety of uses. Shawn Systems is proposing a unique marriage of GPS and computer networking technology through an RF medium that can create a host of new and innovative applications. Besides routine message handling, we have given two detailed application examples, viz., Collision Avoidance and Identification Friend or Foe utilizing our Wide Area Network (WAN). We have received excellent input from industry and academia and we are seeking government funding/involvement in promoting this WAN. We have faculty from MIT and UMASS advising us on areas of Aviation Safety and Radio Networks. Our partners in industry will help in commercialization of the technology. We will also be bringing our expertise in fault tolerance to make the WAN highly reliable. Avionics equipment is size constrained, and Shawn Systems wishes to leverage MCM technology to address packaging/size issues. Anticipated Benefits: Military and Commercial users will benefit immensely from implementing our WAN technology. It has tremendous dual use potential in the following applications: tracking, delivery vehicles, taxis, cargo, stolen cars, providing individual message service, collision avoidance for aircraft and ships, etc..
