Research abstract

A need exists for a reasonable representation of the physical properties and interactions of weapons, soldiers and structures on urbanized terrain, including: A reasonable representation of buildings by class as describe in FM90-10, A characterization of the degree of protection afforded by each class, A characterization of the rubbling characteristics of each class due to artillery and bombs, The effects on the structure of direct fire (including infantry) weapons and grenades, including blast, fire and smoke effects, The lethality characteristics of secondary effects (spalling, building collapse, etc.) of weapons on personnel inside described in JCTG/ME data, an ability to exploit the structure for cover and or concealment weapons emplacement, and obstacles, tactically appropriate to urban terrain, and Incorporation of urban terrain in the operational planning process. TSI proposes under this SBIR proposal to develop a simulation, relying heavily upon simulation components and TSI proposes under this SBIR proposal to develop a simulation, relying heavily upon simulation components and data developed previously by experts in the field that incorporates combatants in urban terrain environment and sensors, including explicit representation of building structures for the study of performance issues relating to the dynamic effects of weapons systems and tactics in urban built up areas. This simulation would: Be fully DIS compliant, Represent buildings by class, including multiple configurations and degraded states for each building class, Assess casualties from secondary effects of building damage by weapons based upon JMEMS data, Provide for commonly used tactics and weapons utilization on urban terrain by combatants, Provide a visual "virtual reality" environment through the use of imagery, soldier/head Time-Space-Position measurement and CIG engines, and VR goggles, and Provide a mechanism for higher "local" resolution for the urban combatants while maintaining a globally consistent resolution for DIS exercises where other simulators/simulations would not have a need to visualize the urban detail.
