Research abstract

In this Phase I proposal to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Computational Physics Incorporated proposes to provide proof of concept for a unique Maxwell solver. The numerical analysis technique discussed in this proposal combines two state-of-the-art proven techniques in a hybrid formulation. The first, is an entire domain Method of Moments (MOM) technique which greatly reduces the number of unknowns required in scattering problems. This Generalized Entire Domain (GED) approach was pioneered and developed by the principal investigator, Mr. Terry L. Krohn. The second is a Quadratic Surface Patch (QSP) physical optics and physical theory of diffraction model, co-authored by Mr. Krohn. This computer code has received national attention from the Electromagnetic Code Consortium (EMCC). Mr. Krohn is a member of the MOM technical working group for the EMCC. Both of the computer models discussed above interface with Computer Aided Design (CAD) geometry packages. The basis for this approach is that internal (non-edge) currents are well represented by optics assumptions. Optics assumptions are angle dependent whereas MOM matrices are not. This proposal details a viable approach to belie this disadvantage and solve problems having many thousands or even millions, of square wavelengths of surface area.
