Research abstract

Continuous Solutions and Purdue University propose to research and develop a means of providing grounding to ship based medium voltage AC (MVAC) power systems that will provide all benefits of high resistance grounding while avoiding excessive heat generation and potential grounding transformer saturation. The specific grounding problems for MVAC naval ship-based power systems are: The ship power systems must continue to operate with a single-phase fault.Medium voltage (13.8kV) architecture would demand excessive heat generation from established grounding techniques during continuous single phase fault conditions.Intermittent and restriking single phase faults can result in dangerous voltage charging if grounding impedance is too high.Faults on the DC legs of bus connected rectifiers can impart a DC component to ground currents, saturating grounding transformers.
