Research abstract

LIQUID CRYSTAL MATERIALS HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED IN THE PAST FOR DETECTING AND VISUALIZING ULTRASOUND IMAGES. HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF THEIR LIMITED DETECTION SENSITIVITY, THE RESULTING "ACOUSTO-OPTICAL" DISPLAYS HAVE NOT BEEN INVESTIGATED FOR MEDICAL IMAGING PURPOSES. RESEARCHERS ARE DEVELOPING NEW LIQUID CRYSTAL MATERIALS WHICH COULD: (1) ENHANCE THE DETECTION SENSITIVITY OF SUCH ACOUSTO-OPTICAL DISPLAYS BY AS MUCH AS 10,000 TIMES; (2) ENHANCE UNDERSTANDING OF THE UNDERLYING PHYSICAL MECHANISMS INVOLVED IN THE ACOUSTO-OPTICAL INTERACTION; AND (3) ALLOW DEVELOPMENT OF ULTRASONIC SYSTEMS WHICH COULD GREATLY AID IN THE DETECTION OF BREAST CANCER, WHICH REMAINS A SERIOUS THREAT TO THE LIVES OF AMERICAN WOMEN.
