Research abstract

This project will design and develop a hybrid mannequin simulator for training military medical personnel and Special Forces in the control of limb hemorrhage. A group of clinical experts from the military will guide the selection of wounds to be simulatedand provide input to the task analysis of skills and procedures that must be mastered for effective treatment. Performance metrics will be developed to discriminate between novice, adequate and expert users, with an emphasis on the development of casescenarios that can differentiate cognitive and technical skills related to knowledge, skill and judgment. A Technical Design Document (TDD) will be developed during the Phase I period for the hybrid mannequin simulator that will be engineered during thePhase II project period. The Phase I Option will focus on the design and development of service-specific applications for training Special Forces and combat medic personnel. It is expected that the development of a high fidelity simulator for training inthe treatment of extremity wounds will provide significant value for preparing U.S. military medical personnel in the treatment of battlefield casualties in both conventional and unconventional environments. It is anticipated that the proposed simulatorwill address a large, emerging market for the training the skills of medical personnel in the control of hemorrhage, including both combat and civilian medics who are increasingly being called on to provide care under emergency and battlefield conditions.
