Research abstract

DETERMINATION OF THE ELEMENTAL COMPOSITION OF THE OUTERMOST LAYER OF ALLOYS IS CRUCIAL FOR THE DESIGN OF SELF-SUSTAININGCOATINGS FOR THE FIRST WALL MATERIALS IN A FUSION REACTOR. DIRECT RECOIL SPECTROSCOPY (DRS) OVERCOMES THE LIMITATIONS INHERENT IN ALL OTHER SURFACE ANALYTICAL APPROACHES FOR THE DETECTION OF LI AND H BY DESORBING THESE ATOMS AS ENERGETIC NEUTRALS WITH A 5 KEV K+ ION BEAM IN A PULSED TIMEOF FLIGHT (TOF) EXPERIMENT. DETECTION WITH NEARLY UNIT EFFICIENCY OF THE FAST LI AND H DESORBED INTO A FORWARD SCATTERING ANGLE ALLOWS SEPARATION OF THESE AND OTHER LIGHT ELEMENTS BELOW 20 AMU INTO A TOF MASS SPECTRUM WITH APPROXIMATELY 1 AMU RESOLUTION. EXPERIMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED ON MODEL SURFACES IN ORDER TO CALIBRATE DRS FOR H, LI, C, O, N, A1, AND CU. DRS WILL THEN BE APPLIED TO ALLOY SAMPLES OF CULI AND A1LI UNDER DEVELOPMENT BY ARGONNE NATIONAL LABORATORIES.
