Research abstract

The primary goal in Phase I is to perform the concept development and system analysis tasks necessary to design the software. A core concept of the software is the ability to construct graphical displays of clinical data that permit rapid and convenient scanning of information across patients, across variables, and along time. The software also includes the ability to use the advanced graphics capabilities of workstations and laser printers for automatic highlighting of aspects of the data that are unusual or of special interest. The software also has the ability to navigate between overview displays and detailed information on individual patients. Other Phase I activities are exploring and selecting the technical approaches to achieve seamless integration of the proposed new software with PROPHET and designing a natural user interface for clinical investigators. Phase II will consist of the coding of this software, a evaluation by the PROPHET user community and by outside experts, and prepare for widespread deployment of the software package in Phase III.
