Research abstract

The cost of ¿damping rings,¿ to be used in the International Linear Collider (ILC), strongly depends on the speed of the kicker drivers. Solid-state technology is now at a point where it is fast enough to meet the demanding requirements of kicker drivers, including those for the ILC. This project will investigate two approaches to the development and demonstration of solid-state kicker drivers for the ILC: the first will use commercially available MOSFETs, and the second will employ Step Recovery Diode (DSRD) technology. Phase I will demonstrate, both experimentally and analytically, that the ILC performance requirements can be achieved with both approaches. In Phase II, the kicker drivers will be built and delivered to the ILC program for assessment and refinement. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by the Applicant: The technology should enable the precise kicker operation needed to handle the desired ILC bunch spacing and energy. In addition, reliable, solid-state kicker pulsers should meet the needs of a wide range of existing and planned accelerators and colliders around the world.
