Research abstract

THIS PROJECT AIMS TO: (1) SPECIFY THE ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS) PREVENTION INFORMATION NEEDS OF MENTALLY RETARDED (MR) PERSONS THAT CAN BE MET WITH INTERACTIVE VIDEO; (2) DESIGN, PRODUCE, AND TEST AN INTERACTIVE VIDEO SEGMENT ABOUT AIDS PREVENTION FOR MR PERSONS; AND (3) DETERMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF PRODUCING A COMPLETE INTERACTIVE VIDEO ON AIDS PREVENTION FOR MR PERSONS. THE STEPS TO ACHIEVE THESE AIMS WILL INCLUDE A LITERATURE SEARCH AND INTERVIEWS OF RESEARCHERS IN INTERACTIVE VIDEO AND IN MR TRAINING AND EDUCATION; CREATION OF A PROTOTYPE SYSTEM INCLUDING A STORYBOARD, VIDEODISK, AND INTERACTIVE COMPUTER PROGRAM; AND A PRETEST OF THE SYSTEM. PHASE I PRODUCTS WILL BE A SCRIPT AND STORYBOARD, A CHECK DISK ON AIDS PREVENTION FOR MR PERSONS, A VIDEODISK DRIVING PROGRAM IN HYPERCARD(TM), AND A FEASIBILITY REPORT ON INTERACTIVE VIDEO FOR MR PERSONS. THESE PRODUCTS WILL PROVE THE APPROPRIATENESS OF THE TECHNOLOGY FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT IN PHASE II. A PHASE II PRODUCT WOULD BE USEFUL FOR SCHOOLS AND AGENCIES PROVIDING SERVICES TO PEOPLE WITH MENTAL RETARDATION.
