Research abstract
Not Available SHAI has developed several Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) for NASA and the DOD. These advanced systems interact with the student and automatically organize a curriculum, monitor the student's activities, model the state of the student's knowledge, diagnose deficiencies, formulate a remedial course of instruction tailored to the specific student, test those remediations, and maintain and use estimates of the student's preferred learning style. The main educational paradigm of these ITSs is based on examples and exercises. Our ITS ideas were originally formulated for Math and Science Education and should be applied to those areas for at-risk students using ITSs which tailor themselves to the needs and backgrounds of the individual students. We propose to build upon and adapt our existing ITS techniques to teaching Algebra to at-risk students. We will then make the resulting Algebra ITS freely available to at-risk students. In Phase 1, we will investigate an example-based approach to an Algebra ITS for at-risk students. We will knowledge engineer high-quality, experienced algebra teachers of at-risk students and incorporate their instructional approaches and expertise into the ITS. We will develop an algebra ITS prototype and evaluate it with groups of at-risk students. The Algebra Project and additional at-risk algebra teachers have agreed to work closely with us.
