Research abstract

65699 The availability of High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) wire, manufactured by a reliable, low-cost process, could revolutionize the electric power industry. For example, compact power transmission cables, motors, and generators could be attained by using high temperature superconductors (HTS) with a high critical current density Jc at 77K and magnetic fields of up to 1.5 Tesla, allowing the use of liquid nitrogen as a coolant. The superconductor YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) could be employed as the enabling material. However, for this to occur, the superconductor must have a high degree of bi-axial texture. This project will develop a low-cost conductor, with high critical current densities, through the epitaxial deposition of a buffer and a YBCO layer on a bi-axially textured metal substrate. Phase I will adapt a buffer deposition process to produce long lengths of the YBCO coated conductor on a non-magnetic metal substrate. The substrate will have enhanced bi-axial texture and low ac losses. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: The availability of a low-cost HTS conductor should impact a broad range of industrial and military applications utilizing compact power transmission cables, electrical transformers, motors, and generators.
